CHANDIGARH: Former cricketer and Punjab local bodies minister
Navjot Sidhu formally got an invite for the swearing-in ceremony of Pakistan's Tehereek-e-Insaf chairman
Imran Khan as the prime minister of the neighbouring country.
Sidhu, who has more than three decades’ association with Imran as a cricketer and commentator, said he got the invite in personal capacity.
“Khan Saab even called me up inviting for the event on Friday. We chatted for a few minutes. I congratulated and conveyed my best wishes to him. This invite is in personal capacity and I have forwarded it to the Union government for perusal,” said Sidhu told TOI.
The invite sent from PTI chairman’s secretariate said: “It’s indeed a great pleasure to have invited you for the oath taking ceremony of PTI’s Chairman Imran Khan as the Prime Minister of Pakistan. The event will be held in Islamabad on Saturday — August 18, 2018. We would want you to kindly grace this historic occasion with your presence.”
Sidhu disclosed that former Indian Cricket team captain
Kapil Dev, who was Imran’s contemporary, has also confirmed having received an invite.
Recalling his association with Imran, Sidhu said, his indomitable spirit and ability to lead from the front have been the “hallmarks of Imran’s towering personality and his ascend to the prime ministership is set give a new beginning to the Indo-Pak relations in the coming times”.
